"There were no smoky dives
Few amours, fou or not
There were no petty crimes
Foreign substances bought
There were no midnight drives
With a crime boss's wife
Need a sentence at most
In assessing my life

Edith Piaf said it better than me
“Je ne regrette rien"
Pretty song, but not intended for me
Time to put some Muzak on"

Sparks, Edith Piaf (Said It Better Than Me)

This album alone would be enough to justify the considerable amount of time I spent on "best of 2017" lists, looking for what I might have missed throughout the year. I love a good, old "weird song", and Hippopotamus hits the right tone, feeling new and exciting,  but not annoyingly pretentious. The song Edith Piaf (Said It Better Than Me) is an whole other story: I was blown away by its mix of disenchanted lyrics and energetic music. Thinking about my own experiences, as well as those of my close friends, the  mixture feels very familiar, heart trying to convince mind not to give up on enthusiasm yet. Maybe one day I'll find the right words to talk about that.
